If you know about Henry’s Tavern, then you’ve either heard about its 100 beers on tap or you’re a Mariners fan — or both.

I found the place memorable for another reason, a gooey, beefy, peanut-buttery reason.

Henry’s Tavern serves one of the best happy-hour burgers — a juicy, charred patty, layered with cheddar, pickles, onion rings, garlic aioli and bacon, topped with crunchy peanut butter. That’s right, peanut butter. Not ketchup.

The sticky peanut butter coats the beef for a lingering bite that you wouldn’t get with the usual burger.

In April, the Portland-based Henry’s Tavern — there’s also an outpost in Plano, Texas — opened a branch one block south of Safeco Field. Like most chains, it takes a Cheesecake Factory-like approach to food. There are more options than a food court here. Happy hour features crab-and-avocado sushi roll, orange-glazed chicken with rice, southern country-chicken strips, along with comfort-food faves like mac and cheese.

The $3 thin-crust pizza here — topped with globs of bacon, brats, onion rings, smoked mozzarella, among a smorgasbord of other things — will taste better if you treat it as a plate of bar snacks rather than an actual pie.

Somehow, Henry’s Tavern managed to put together a lineup of 100 beers that isn’t exciting. Gems like the Avery Brewing Co. White Rascal ale are too few and far between. A lot of the great beers here — Chuckanut Pilsner, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Green Flash West Coast IPA — can be found at most decent taverns across Seattle.

When there isn’t a ballgame though, Henry’s Tavern lures bar hoppers with a ridiculously cheap happy hour ($3.50 pints and a great $3 burger) to fill its cavernous bar on nongame days.

The burger comes with sides of BBQ potato chips made in-house. The secret to Henry’s burger is that the peanut butter, with the apple wood-smoked bacon, provides a sweet-and-salty bite that’s similar to those addicting salted caramels. That $3 burger alone is worth the trip down to Sodo.

Henry’s Tavern, 1518 First Ave. S., offers happy hour daily from 3-6 p.m. and again 9 p.m. to at least 10 p.m. on Mondays-Thursdays and 10 p.m. to at least 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Happy hour from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Note that happy hour will not be offered on game days and during other major events. Happy-hour discounts include drink discounts from $3.50 to $5. Bar food ranges from $3-$6.95. 206-624-0501 or
