Seattle Center throws itself a 50th birthday party on Saturday
So why plan your weekend around a birthday party? If you’ve played Twister and eaten vanilla ice cream with Hershey’s syrup once… well, you’ve done it.
But this isn’t just any birthday party. It’s the Seattle Center Big Birthday Bash, the official get-down-and-get-funky celebration of the Center’s 50th anniversary, and it’s an Official Cheap Fun Sanctioned Event (which we just made up because it sounds cool).
For Saturday’s hoopla, it’s kind of like somebody said, “Let’s have a big honking party, who has ideas?” And they didn’t say no to anything.
There are five entertainment stages. Free rides in the Playway. Free Monorail rides for kids (small print: with a paying adult). Free EMP admission if you’re under 17. Free Space Needle admission for two kids with a paying adult. Free entry to the Earth Portal. A screening of “It Happened at the World’s Fair” (with Elvis!). Cupcake Palooza, whatever that might be. A wall of Jell-O bricks (it’s art). A vintage car show, Seafair Pirates, a wellness tent, food carts, a kids zone, and — here’s fun — the Big Wedding, for first timers or anybody who wants to re-up.

And they promise “much more!” No word about Twister.
It’s 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday throughout Seattle Center grounds (beneath the tall pointy structure, pictured here during a Blue Angels fly by last month). Free admission. More information: www.seattlecenter.com/birthday.
