The 5th Avenue Theatre's new season includes a tour of "Next to Normal" and old favorites "Guys and Dolls" and "Oklahoma!"
The 5th Avenue Theatre’s 2010-2011 season will open with the premiere tour of the Tony Award-honored, salsa-flavored musical “In the Heights.” Also in the seven-show lineup: the current Broadway hit “Next to Normal,” which was first workshopped at Issaquah’s Village Theatre, and boasts a book and lyrics by local native Brian Yorkey.
In addition: a tour of the (short-lived) Dolly Parton musical “9 to 5,” local premieres of the recent shows “Vanities” and holiday tuner “A Christmas Story, the Musical”; and new stagings of the classics “Guys and Dolls” and “Oklahoma!”
“The season fulfills our mission of producing musical theater of all kinds from the past, present and future,” said 5th Avenue executive producer and artistic director David Armstrong. Armstrong is especially keen on the locally cast reworkings of “A Christmas Story” and the Off Broadway show “Vanities” (based on Jack Heifner’s play about a trio of cheerleaders). The latter is a coproduction with ACT Theatre. To accommodate subscribers of both companies, the show will have a lengthy run in a 400-seat venue at ACT — “the perfect place for this,” Armstrong said.
The 5th Avenue Theatre’s complete 2010-2011 roster:
- With death on table, McEnroe jury's friendships crumbled
- Salary cap expert Joel Corry with another look at Russell Wilson's contract
- To retire at 55 takes big savings
- Microsoft employees -- past and present -- look back over the years
- No time to eat in Silicon Valley, so techies chug their protein
