Arts and entertainment in the fast-growing South Lake Union neighborhood will be front and center at this year’s South Lake Union Block Party on Friday.
It’s the tenth year for the popular event with activities and entertainment for all ages. This year, proceeds will benefit Cornish College of the Arts.
Sample bites from eight local eateries from noon to 3 p.m. and check out the “Best Burger in SLU” grilling competition hosted by Pat Cashman, from 4 to 7 p.m. Several food trucks will be on hand from 4 to 10 p.m., and wine and microbrews hosted by Tom Douglas eateries Cuoco and Brave Horse Tavern will be available at the beer and wine garden from noon until 10 p.m.
The School of Visual Concepts’ Wayzgood & Steamroller Smackdown celebration of letterpress printing is a new feature at this year’s party, with plein-air poster painting, a letterpress marketplace and Steamroller Smackdown best poster competition.

Kids’ Area activities are available from noon to 7 p.m. and will include a bounce house with slides, a bicycle raffle and a hands-on community art project.
Cornish College of the Arts musicians perform from 3:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., followed by the crowd-pleasing energy of the Seahawks Blue Thunder drum line celebrating the Super Bowl champions.
Seattle Rock Orchestra performs before the Cinema on the Lawn showing of the musical comedy “School of Rock” at about 9 p.m. Bring low-back chairs and blankets and grab a spot on the lawn early because the space can fill quickly.
The South Lake Union streetcar is a great way to get to the celebration. It is easy to connect to from Metro or Sound Transit buses, Link Light Rail and the Seattle Monorail.
