Tukwila school rallies to support homeless and hungry students: Thorndyke Elementary in Tukwila has started a volunteer-run program that fills backpacks with nonperishable food and distributes them to students. The majority of the school’s students live in poverty, and 20 percent are homeless or experiencing housing insecurity.

Bullying rates drop among U.S. teens (The Washington Post): One out of five students in U.S. middle and high schools reported being bullied in 2013, the lowest rate since the federal government began surveying students in 2005. It’s more common for girls to be victims of bullying than it is for boys.

UW regents vote to divest from coal: The University of Washington board of regents voted unanimously Thursday to sell its investments in coal companies but also passed a resolution saying the university should keep its shares in oil and gas companies.
