A powerful centerpiece is the key to creating a table that wows guests. Consider using matching garden urns to anchor your centerpiece. Other possibilities include tall vases, cake plates or hurricanes — anything that provides some height and allows you to embellish with seasonal décor.
Incorporate moss, straw and fall foliage into the mix. If you want to go bigger, use longer tendrils of fall foliage and fallen sticks in your centerpiece.
Lushly layered place settings should weave together different colors, textures and heights. Maybe start with orange table runners, which provide a pop of bright fall color; this will break up the wood of a tabletop and serve as place mats.
Look in your china cabinet and see what dishes you could mix and match to give your table a blend of patterns and colors. You’ll be surprised by the diverse pieces you can weave together to create a charming place setting.
Use personalization to make each place setting special. Perhaps go with a name card so everyone knows where to sit, and write a conversation prompt on it, such as “I am thankful for …” It will make guests feel like treasured additions to the party.
Be sure to add in a few other touches that celebrate the season, such as fall-themed dishes and table linens.
While the dining table is the undisputed star of the show at Thanksgiving, remember to add some decorative touches to the rest of your dining room. Many of the pieces on a buffet, for example, remain in place year round. Consider adding a few seasonal motifs on Thanksgiving, such as a scale holding a fall figurine, a pumpkin or a bouquet of orange roses.
