Brian McAndrews, a former aQuantive chief executive and Microsoft senior executive, has been named chief executive of Internet radio pioneer Pandora, effective immediately.

The publicly traded company has built a large following and is now working to build its advertising business to boost revenue.

McAndrews ran aQuantive, a digital marketing company that Microsoft bought for $6 billion in 2007. Last year, Microsoft took a $6.2 billion accounting charge for the acquisition, effectively acknowledging that the deal was a bust.

McAndrews joined Microsoft after the acquisition and left the company at the end of 2008. He joined Madrona Venture Group, a Seattle venture capital company, in 2009, where he’s been an investing partner. He currently serves on the boards of The New York Times Co., Grubhub Seamless and AppNexus.
