Boeing will outsource the security operation at many of its Puget Sound sites this fall, leaving about 64 of its uniformed guards facing layoff.
Security firm AlliedBarton
will take over security at Boeing’s plants and office buildings in Renton, Auburn, Frederickson, Longacres and Bellevue.
All Boeing security guards are members of the Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America (SPFPA), a union whose current contract with the company includes a job protection guarantee to the 146 security guards hired before Nov. 22, 2006.
Those guards will retain their jobs with Boeing and will continue to provide security at the Everett plant and at the various Boeing sites on the Duwamish corridor in Seattle.

The remaining guards will receive layoff notices in October as security at other local sites transfers to AlliedBarton, said Boeing spokesman Dean Tougas.
“The expectation is that many of them will end up working for AlliedBarton or will at least have the opportunity to apply,” Tougas said.
The security personnel don’t expect the pay and benefits from AlliedBarton to match those at Boeing. “We’ve heard from several (guards) that they are not interested in those jobs,” SPFPA Local 5 president Dan Clayton wrote in a letter to members on the union website.
Clayton said the union was informed of Boeing’s intention last month and was “caught totally off guard” by the news.
The Puget Sound area plants are the last of Boeing’s sites to retain uniformed security in-house. Boeing began outsourcing security elsewhere around the country in October 2007.
AlliedBarton, headquartered in Conshohocken, Penn., has provided security at most Boeing sites nationwide since March 2011.
