American Girl, known for making pricey, ethnically diverse dolls representing different historical periods, plans to open its first Northwest location this summer at Alderwood mall in Lynnwood.

American Girl, a division of toy giant Mattel known for making pricey, ethnically diverse dolls representing different historical periods, said Wednesday it plans to open its first Northwest location this summer at Alderwood mall in Lynnwood.

American Girl, of Middleton, Wisc., is taking 12,500 square feet of space spanning the mall’s interior and outdoor Village.

The new store will replace several departed or relocated tenants, including Cold Stone Creamery, World Wrapps and Anchor Blue.

The retailer promises a complete assortment of dolls, accessories, children’s clothing and books. Also, it will have a 50-seat restaurant, doll hair salon and T-shirt design boutique.

Founded in 1986, American Girl began as a catalog company aimed at girls between the ages of 3 and 12. It became a bricks-and-mortar retailer in 1998 with the opening of a Chicago flagship, followed by a large store on New York’s Fifth Avenue in 2003 and another large store at The Grove in Los Angeles in 2006.

Since 2007, American Girl has expanded to Atlanta, Dallas, Boston, Minneapolis, Denver and Kansas City, opening at a rate of two new stores a year, except for 2009, when it had no openings.

Its Alderwood location is one of two new stores planned for 2011. The other will be in Washington, D.C., this June.
