W. James McNerney Jr. will be named chief executive of Boeing tomorrow morning, according to published reports.
The 55-year-old McNerney, a longtime General Electric executive and most recently the chairman and CEO of 3M, has been on Boeing’s board of directors since 2001. His tenure at GE was capped by running its aircraft engine unit, a vital supplier to Boeing.

The Wall Street Journal and BusinessWeek reported this evening that Boeing will announce McNerney’s appointment June 30. The Wall Street Journal said McNerney will also be appointed chairman.

Spokesmen for the company could not be immediately reached for comment.

The selection of McNerney would end a search that began in March, when Harry Stonecipher was forced out over an affair with a female Boeing executive.
